Nanotechnology is a very complex field that requirex extreme precision and accuracy. This practice involves the manipulation of molecules or atoms for different industrial purposes. With this new found ability for scientists to alter structures and things at their most basin unit, the possibilities are truly endless for this field. This manipulation on such a tiny level, can have very large scale implications. We have observed the use of nanotechnology in the fields of medicine, security, food, and energy.

In fact, nanotechnology is beginning to have large impacts in the art industry. There are many different ways in which the application of nanotechnology can affect the art industry like the formation of new colors or art restoration. Specifically looking at the restoration of art, nanotech has allowed for the removal of oils, the restoration of bones and artifacts, and the repair of flaking paint. We first observed the cleaning and restoration process through nanodrops in the Brancacci Chapel in Italy. These nanodrops contain larger surface aresa which allow for more oils to be removed and absorbed. The end result is a cleaned painting or art piece. It is truly amazing to see how far technology and science has taken us and the capabilities it has allowed for like the restoration of ancient art.

  1. I hadn't put much thought into the cleaning properties of some nanotechnologies, but their use in art restoration is a great example. As such, pieces may be extremely fragile and nanotech can provide a more accurate cleaning without the stress of conventional methods. To this end I wonder if similar methodologies can be applied to shield contemporary pieces from wear or even produce self cleaning ones.

  2. Hi Jared,
I really enjoyed your blog post this week looking into the applications of nanotechnology, specifically the details provided about the implications of nanotech in art restoration. I am curious if these oil absorbing nanotech molecules could be applied to environmental oil spills and provide a similar effect. The field of nanotechnology is expanding and I am excited to see the new ways we can apply the technology to more fields.
