Week 4 Blog

Science and Technology have become very reliant on each other in recent years. The covid 19 pandemic serves as a very relevant example where this connection can be seen. Throughout the pandemic, there has been a very big push for people to get vaccinated. It has become almost impossible to live a normal life without being fully vaccinated. This has caused some concern amongst parts of the population that question whether or not the integrity of this vaccine is true. Conspiracies have been made linking this vaccine with a microchip being implanted into all of us. While it probably isn't true, it does bring up the idea of using technological microchips for scientific purposes. As we observe the possibility of technological microchips, there are many different people pioneering this new field. This can be observed with Elon Musks microchip Neuralink. This microchip connects electrodes through the brain that allows for helping with brain function and even possibly treating some disea...

Event 1 Blog

Proof of Attendance Throughout this course, we have learned about the different connections art and design media has with many outside fields. We have compared arts with mathematics and more recently discussed the connections between art and robotics. The event I attended made a very strong and interesting connection between science and arts. The event I attended was one in which Anna Lindemann, an artist and educator, showed how she connects the two fields. In her work, she creates very artistic animations and representations of animals and figures to portray the scientific nature of evolution. Evo Devo is a scientific field that looks at evolutionary developmental biology of different species. Lindemann then creates amazing portrayals of these patterns through her expertise in art and design.  In this specific presentation "The Colony", she presented her artistic animation describing the social nature of ants and its connections to humans. By incorporating a prominent arti...

Week 3 Blog: Robotics and Art

Image
Robotics and art have very prominent connections to each other. We often see these connections most easily in movies and television shows. when I think about this connection between the two, one of the first movies that comes to mind is the movie Wall-E. The main character of the movie is a robot named Wall-E who lives alone on the planet earth. He developed a personality and becomes very lonely on the planet. Throughout the movie, we as the viewers are able to establish a strong appreciation and connection with the lonely robot. A big reason for this is because of the artistic nature of his appearance. He has very big eyes as well as two arms that dangle in front of him. He is also very short and stumpy which adds to the almost cute like appearance.  Robots are becoming more and more apparent in our society today. While they have not yet been integrated into our every day lives. In the near future, it would not be surprising if they were observed on a daily basis. Robots ha...

Week 2 Blog

While math and art seem as if they are two completely different fields, they have many overlapping influences and connections on each other. Mathematics has the ability to be a form of art and art has the ability to be a form of mathematics. While in math there is only one absolute answer, there are many different ways of achieving that answer which brings in the abstract artistic component. Similarly in many different forms of art, it is essential to use mathematical skills like geometry in order to create the pieces that are intended to be created (Henderson). Additionally, we also see the mathematical aspect of how different dimensions can create different visuals (Flatland).  Hamid Naderi Yeganeh is the artist responsible for all of the pictures and pieces of art in this blog. Yenageh is a mathematician who is from Iran and he recently began creating these beautiful pieces of art through the implementation of math number formulas. While this is a much more in depth use of mathe...

Week 1 Two Cultures

Image
My name is Jared Karros and I am a third year sociology major. Like many other college students, social media is something I spend a lot of time on. Therefore, I wanted to analyze its relevance as a culture of its own. I am taking this class because I hope to learn more about design and media arts.  There are many different forms of culture across the world. One of which that has become extremely prominent in almost everyone's lives is the culture of social media. There is a very significant connection between social media as well as design media because social media often has graphic designs and other forms of media. We are able to see this in Snow's claim about the two cultures of art and science and how they both appear in social and design media. Design media art serves more as a scientific type culture because of the research that goes into how different designs are used and which work best. Social media on the other hand would serve as a more artistic one because there ...
